About the Federal Electorate of Fairfax
The federal electorate of Fairfax was created in 1984 and it is named after Ruth Fairfax.
Ruth Fairfax was the founding President of the Queensland Country Women’s Association. Born in Sydney, Ruth spent many years after her marriage working with women in western Queensland as they fought the daily battle against isolation. In 1920, Ruth played a leading role in the formation of the QCWA and was elected as the first president.
Fairfax covers an area of approximately 1,108 sq km taking in much of the former Maroochy Shire from Coolum Beach and Eumundi in the north to Buderim and Palmwoods in the south to part of the Conondale National Park to the west of Kenilworth. The main towns include Buderim, Coolum Beach, Eumundi, Kenilworth, Mapleton, Maroochydore, Montville, Nambour, Palmwoods, Woombye and Yandina.
Much more can be found about the electorate by going to the Australian Electoral Commission's website and also visiting the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.
The AEC's Queensland Redistribution Committee has recently announced the final decision. The new boundaries have been finalised and were gazetted in December 2009.
